Share

After you have reviewed the free IDEX “Study Guide” prepared by CCIDC, we suggest that you look at the IDEX reference book and material list.

This list shows you every reference book, materials and California building codes that the actual IDEX exam is based on.  The exam development task force,  along with Castle Worldwide psychometricians,  wrote the exam questions based on the content of these materials.

Tip #2: Download and print this reference list. Read it. You may want to buy some of these books for your library or ask your designer friends if they have copies you can borrow.  Put the list into  a 3-ring binder or file folder for future reference.

Whether you will be studying alone or in a group, here is what you first need to do to become familiar with this interior design certification exam. The tips I will be publishing will get you started and help you organize so you can  study effectively for the IDEX exam.

Tip #1.  Get the free IDEX “Study Guide” prepared by CCIDC.

The value of certification for interior designers

Share

“Certified Interior Designer” is a LEGAL TITLE  and a professional appellation recognized by California law (Business & Professions Code 5800).  No one else can use the title unless they have met the requirements of CCIDC and have become a “Certified Interior Designer” .

There is a big difference between Certified Interior Designers and those who are not certified.  CIDs have proven credentials: education, experience and passage of an examination that covers Calif. Building Codes, Business Practices, Ethics and Design Standards.  CIDs are held accountable by a code of ethics and they promote the health, safety and welfare of the public.

CIDs receive a stamp with their name and certification number for their drawings and construction documents, identifying them as qualified professionals under California law.

Certification by the California Council for Interior Design Certification (CCIDC)  is the highest and the only legal credential an interior designer can have in the state of California.

CCIDC’s Mission Statement . . .

“. . . is to establish and implement professional standards and educational requirements, educate the public, and facilitate interior design professional’s compliance with our standards and code of ethics in order to provide for the protection, health, safety and welfare of the public.”

Share

It’s not too early to study for the IDEX exam.

With 70 days remaining until the Fall IDEX exam begins, designers are in a good position to start studying now.

Please reference The IDEX Classification System to see all the sections and items you will be tested on.

Take a look at the books and codes which were used to create the exam.  How much of these subjects do you already know?

Even the most experienced and well educated of interior designers would need to study to pass the IDEX exam.   The question is, what is the best way to study?

Since the IDEX Prep Online class covers the items in the above mentioned Classification System and you have 2 months of anytime access,  we are confident this is the class for you.  Still not sure?  Please check out our testimonials from past students.

IDEX and NCIDQ

Share

Interior design examinations are all about testing your knowledge, professionalism, and protecting the public’s health, safety and welfare.

The controversy (and myth)  that currently exists is that there should be only one exam for interior designers (the NCIDQ) and that all other exams (AKBD, CQRID, IDEX) are not adequate.

The interior design profession is  not now, and never has been, a “one size fits all” profession. While the NCIDQ does test on a high level of knowledge and skill,  it does not test on deeper specialties or life safety codes that are specific to individual states.

It is not without irony that the various interior design clubs have adopted their own brand of interior design exams for designers to become “professional members” of their respective organizations:

  • IDS has their residential design exam, CQRID
  • NKBA has their kitchen and bath exam,  AKBD
  • IIDA and ASID accepts the NCIDQ

All of these groups have a vested interest in keeping their status quo. These exams,  in their own right, are just fine but what I object to is the narrow-minded and negative attitudes of some designers and their organizations about the IDEX California exam for legal certification.

Facts about the IDEX California exam and CCIDC, the certification board that administers it:

  1. IDEX is the ONLY interior design exam that contains at least one-third of its questions on California Building Codes & Regulations and Title 24 relevant to interior construction, exiting and accessibility, in addition to professional business practices, ethics and design standards.
  2. It is the ONLY interior design exam where passing leads to a LEGAL TITLE of “Certified Interior Designer” in the state of California (under California Business & Professions Code 5800).
  3. The IDEX exam was developed by an all-industry group comprised of Certified Interior Designers, educators, a California licensed architect,  several building and fire department officials, and a general contractor, and was facilitated by Castle Worldwide, a national psychometric and test development firm.
  4. It is a CERTIFICATION examination, not a specialty interior design exam. Without exception, designers must take the exam and have an interior design education from an accredited college or university, in addition to work experience.
  5. California law (B&P 5800) requires the interior design profession to create its own oversight board to administer and monitor the “Certified Interior Designer” statute which included a suitable examination for certification purposes.

The IDEX meets all of the qualifications and demands of the California state legislature for an entry level certification exam.

California does not prevent any designer from taking other specialty or generalized exams such as the NCIDQ; however, to hold the legally-recognized title of “Certified Interior Designer” in California, you must pass the IDEX.   One of the best ways to study for the IDEX is to take the IDEX Prep Online class.
